Agriculture & Climate Change Adaptation

In the face of growing environmental stress, water scarcity, and disrupted agricultural systems, AGO recognizes climate change as a cross-cutting threat to food security, livelihoods, and community resilience especially in rural and conflict-affected areas. Our approach to agriculture and climate change adaptation focuses on strengthening the capacity of individuals, cooperatives, and communities to sustainably manage natural resources, enhance food production, and adapt to changing environmental conditions.

AGO prioritizes locally driven, climate-resilient, and inclusive solutions to agricultural challenges, ensuring that smallholder farmers, women, and youth are equipped not only with technical knowledge, but also with access to tools, markets, and institutions that support sustainable practices and risk reduction.

Strategic Objectives

AGO’s agriculture and climate adaptation strategy is guided by several core goals:

  • Promote sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices adapted to local ecosystems
  • Strengthen the resilience of smallholder farmers against drought, salinization, and land degradation
  • Improve water use efficiency and support community-led water resource management
  • Increase climate awareness, early warning preparedness, and local adaptation planning
  • Enhance income generation through climate-smart agri-business and value chains
  • Engage youth and women in green economy solutions and land-based livelihoods
Sustainable Farming and Soil Restoration

AGO trains farmers in sustainable land management, conservation agriculture, organic composting, intercropping, and soil rehabilitation techniques. These practices restore soil fertility, increase yields, and reduce reliance on chemical inputs. Demonstration plots and farmer field schools are used to facilitate peer learning and promote adoption.

Climate-Resilient Crop and Livestock Systems

We promote the use of drought-tolerant crops, native seed varieties, and adaptive livestock practices that align with local agroecological zones. Farmers receive support to diversify production, improve post-harvest storage, and reduce seasonal vulnerabilities.

Water Efficiency and Irrigation Innovation

AGO implements community-based water management systems, such as drip irrigation, lined canals, rainwater harvesting, and greywater reuse. These efforts address water scarcity and improve efficiency across farming operations. Technical training is paired with access to irrigation kits and infrastructure rehabilitation.

Green Agri-Business Development

To strengthen rural economies, AGO supports the establishment and upgrading of climate-smart agro-enterprises, including food processing, dairy production, seedling nurseries, and solar-powered cold storage. Farmers and entrepreneurs receive training in business planning, marketing, and financial management, with targeted support for women and youth-led ventures.

Early Warning and Climate Awareness

AGO works with communities and local authorities to develop localized early warning systems for droughts, heatwaves, and flooding. Climate literacy workshops, community risk mapping, and seasonal planning sessions are used to strengthen preparedness and adaptive decision-making at the local level.

Community-Led Natural Resource Management

AGO facilitates inclusive planning and governance processes around natural resource management, involving farmers, herders, water users, and youth. Initiatives include reforestation, rangeland management, and the protection of key ecosystems such as wetlands, marshes, and riverbeds. Community committees are supported to monitor and manage shared resources sustainably.

Target Groups

AGO’s agriculture and climate change interventions focus on:

  • Smallholder farmers and landless agricultural workers in vulnerable zones
  • Women engaged in agriculture, food processing, and seed production
  • Youth seeking eco-friendly livelihood alternatives or training in green skills
  • Pastoralists and herders affected by drought, land degradation, and migration
  • Local cooperatives, water user groups, and community-based organizations

Sustainability & Impact

AGO’s approach to climate adaptation and agriculture is participatory, data-informed, and aligned with both national adaptation strategies and global environmental standards. By embedding capacity-building, inclusive governance, and market linkages into all activities, we ensure long-term sustainability and ownership.

Monitoring frameworks track yield improvements, water usage, income diversification, and adoption of sustainable practices. AGO collaborates with government agriculture departments, environmental agencies, and technical experts to harmonize efforts and build scalable models.

To date, AGO has supported over 15000 farming households through sustainable agriculture initiatives, introduced efficient irrigation solutions in 8 districts, and established community adaptation plans in high-risk climate zones—contributing to stronger food systems and improved resilience.
